Gray Scrapbook

Album of newspaper cuttings, articles and photographs first compiled in 1954 by Wally H and Eileen E Gray, with the aim of showing in pictorial form the history of the club. It has been added to ever since by the club members, most recently by George Pyall in 2006-7. Many of the photographs were held by the Club in their Club Room at Regent Street, others were supplied by members following appeals by the compilers.

[Page 45] Typescript text, 1975; Postcard image of P Dorando, disqualified winner marathon race

Typescript text signed and dated by David Crosfield, member of the Polytechnic Harriers, 10th November 1975, giving some context to the album images; including details of the various sports grounds featured; 133x204mm. Postcard featuring image of Dorando Pietri, disqualified winner of the Marathon race. [He is being assisted over the line by Jack Andrew, Honorary General Secretary of the Polytechnic Harriers, and organiser of the Marathon - this act led to a protest by the Americans whose athlete, Hayes, finished second, and who was eventually given the winner's title. Public support for Italian runner led to the presentation of a cup to Pietri by Queen Alexandra]; 87x130mm.

John Joseph Hayes

Postcard of John 'Johnny' Joseph Hayes, wearing number 26 shirt, finishing the 1908 Olympic Marathon. Hayes came second to Pietro Dorando but was given the gold medal following a successful protest by the American team that Dorando had been assisted over the finish line. Also depicts one of the officials, Jack Andrew, of the Polytechnic Harriers.

Bound volume entitled 'Polytechnic Olympic Games 1908 Honorary Members'
Visiting athletes were given full Polytechnic Membership free. Volume contains columns for name, address, country, events, ticket no and date issued. 307 tickets issued. Volume continues with other events.
