Scope and content

Papers of Herbert Allingham (1867-1936), father of Margery (who attended Regent Street Polytechnic). He wrote serialised fiction for half-penny and penny weeklies. The collection comprises c.6 linear metres of publications, manuscripts and diaries. Potential research/academic themes which might be explored with the collection include the power of editors, changing nature of the press in the 20th century, anonymity and authorship and Marxism (consumption and capitalism).

The collection comprises:
/1 Amateur Scraps (March 1885 - May 1888) Twenty six exercise books containing the records of a writing circle to which Allingham belonged in Cambridge.

Manuscripts, typescripts and clippings. Appendix I includes an indication of which titles may be found in the archive and which are in library collections. The clippings are of the relevant pages of the publication only, except where indicated otherwise.
/2 Boys' Stories, 1905-1929
/3 Early Short Stories and Early Non AP Serials, 1892-1934
/4 Amalgamated Press Serials, 1901-1935
/5 Dundee Serials, 1918-1925
/6 Mother Love and variations, 1914-1932
/7 Non AP, Non Dundee Serials, 1917-1930
/8 Film Interest, 1920-1928

/9 Diaries for 1886-1935 (incomplete) These are usually related to work rather than personal matters and are rarely complete. His 1935 trip round the markets with Phil Allingham is recorded in a separate notebook.
Cash books covering the years 1908-1935 (incomplete)

/10 Fragments of otherwise untraced texts. These offer evidence that Allingham's actual output was certainly larger than the items listed in Appendix I.
