'Riding House Street studios. A shot from an afternoon session, featuring some cheap Saint paperbacks. The idea was to recreate the look and feel of 50's Hollywood Technicolor.'

'The Umbrella were a short lived band from 1983-ish to about 1985. I shared a flat with the drummer, Simon Hoare (the one with the white hair) and became involved in their publicity, doing band shots, a record cover and a video. Norman Fisher Jones (the one with the black spiky hair) went on to form Apollo 440 and be a member of the Cure and Magazine as well as collaborating with Howard Devoto on solo projects. Jim Gardner in glasses) emigrated to New Zealand where he is a composer. The other gentleman left the band shortly after this shoot, making all the band shots redundant. Spring 1984.'

'From the shoot above. Female model unknown. She arrived, posed and went without leaving any details to get prints or anything. In conversation afterwards it turned out that none of us knew her or why she had turned up. Spring 1984'

'Simon Farnhell in the colour technician's room at Riding House Street. This room was the social centre for photography students as colour film and print processing was slow and there was a lot of waiting about time.'

'Me, 1984, in the studios, shooting for a short project about allegory. This is a self portrait. We had been learning about this in our theory lectures. I am illustrating 'Futility' by attempting to nail a jelly to a plate.'
