The Centre for Sustainable Development (CfSD) was established within the School of the Built Environment (SABE) at the University of Westminster in 1998, in recognition of that a growing number of research activities were convening under a common theme of sustainable development.

CfSD provided a forum for collaborative research initiatives and supported joint working between researchers and academics from diverse research disciplines within the School. CfSD also hosted an University-wide interdisciplinary research network for staff members who are actively involved in research in various aspects of sustainable development.

Water Ski Club (1974-[1979])

First column over several years of the publishing of McGarel, there is a report on the Polytechnic’s Water Ski Club in May 1974. Later on in that year in October 1974, the society arranged meetings on either Saturdays or Sundays in Littlehampton, Sussex, where members were able to use a 65 hp Mercury engine. In April 1979, the society operated at Kirtons farm near Reading, with membership cost £5. The society at the time was more suited to people who had previous experience of water skiing rather than complete novices.

The Trampoline Society was first mentioned in the McGarel in November 1974, where training took place on Tuesday’s 4pm-6pm and Wednesday’s 1.30pm-3pm in the Main Gym, Regent Street. Throughout the academic year of 1975/76, training took place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at 4.30pm-6pm.

Sky Diving Society (1971-[1974])

The first mention of the sky diving society is advertised in November 1971, where a meeting took place at Elsey Court on Tuesday 9th November, to decide which ten people would be allowed first to skydive. In January and February 1974, training had been arranged at the Peterborough Parachute Centre.

Skiing Society (1977-[1982])

The Skiing Society was established in October 1977 and was first mentioned in the McGarel during this time, were it was reported that society hoped to arrange a two week skiing trip over christmas. From March 19th-26th 1978, the society had arranged to go on a trip to Italy. On January 3rd 1982, the society organised a trip to Austria as a ski holiday. On 15th December, the society had a party of students attending a trip to Tignes in France for 9 days.

Canterbury began in the mid-1920s as the brand name for finely knitted woollen underwear made by Lane Walker Rudkin Limited (LWR) in Ashburton, New Zealand. Into the 1930s they expanded by manufacturing rayon and cotton knitwear as well as swimwear and sportswear, including developing a cotton rugby jersey which became a signature product. In 2009 the company went into receivership and the Canterbury brand was purchased by Pentland Group in 2012.
